Spoiler alert: rant incoming. As a spine surgeon, I do everything in my power to ensure a surgery runs smoothly start to finish. But that surgery doesn’t actually begin in the operating room, it begins long before that, with scheduling. Any surgical procedure is complex and requires a number of people and processes to accomplish correctly. When I first started medical school in the 70s, it was controversial to have a surgical sales rep in the OR telling a doctor how to use a specific implant or instrument. Nowadays, those reps are commonplace to provide technical expertise, and we rely on them.So what happens when your sales rep is out of town, and their associate fails to fulfill their responsibilities? You wind up with a major setback that puts your patient’s appointment at risk. And that’s where I get aggravated.
