Let’s talk about the cervicothoracic junction. This junction is where the neck (cervical) and upper back (thoracic) connect.
Now, the cervical spine has lots of motion like bending forward or backward, tilting, and rotating. The thoracic spine has very little motion in comparison to the neck or lower back, although it does contribute to motion like reaching, twisting, and bending.
Because this patient underwent a previous cervical fusion at C3-C6, the only motion at this junction was occurring at C6-C7-T1. Unfortunately (although not unexpectedly), these discs simply wore out and became severely compromised, leading to pain and a bit of kyphosis. (Excessive forward curvature or roundback.)
These scans highlight this junction before and after surgery to fuse these collapsing discs and restore a normal curvature.
