Camping Comfort: How to Sleep Well and Protect Your Spine Outdoors

Camping gives you the opportunity to escape your busy and stressful life and reconnect with nature. In order to enjoy your time, it’s important to protect your spine and ensure that you’re getting a good night’s sleep. Here are some spine-friendly sleeping positions to try:

  • Sleeping on Your Side: Side sleeping can be a great way to protect your spine and neck. You could use a thicker pillow to keep your neck aligned with your spine and place a folded jacket between your legs to prevent twisting your back.
  • Sleeping on Your Back: Sleeping on your back is one of the best sleep positions for your spine. To keep your back in neutral alignment you should place a small, rolled-up jacket under your knees to relieve pressure on your lower back and ensure that your neck is properly supported with a low-loft pillow.
  • Avoid Sleeping on Your Stomach: Stomach sleeping is not recommended for maintaining spinal health. If you have to sleep on your stomach, you should try to minimize pressure by choosing a thin pillow for your head.
