Flip-Flops and Back Pain

Flip-flops are an easy shoe to pick when you’re on-the-go in the summer; however, they aren’t always the best shoe to support your feet and spine. Here’s how flip-flops are tied to back pain:

  • Instability: Flip-flops keep your feet securely in place with a flimsy strap which causes you to grip the sole with your toes which strains your muscles.
  • No Arch Support: Flip-flops are designed with flat soles that don’t offer any arch support. Your feet have natural arches that help to distribute weight evenly and absorb shock when you walk. Without support, the arches collapse, which causes your feet to roll and can cause pain. Over time this can affect your spine.
  • Minimal Cushioning: The soles of flip-flops are thin and made from rubber or foam which doesn’t offer much cushioning. Your joints and spine rely on cushioned footwear to absorb the impact of walking.
