How to Choose Spine-Friendly Outdoor Furniture

Summer is the perfect time for you to redo your deck with some new paint, decorations, and of course new furniture. The last thing you want when choosing outdoor furniture is picking furniture that will cause you a sore back or neck. Here’s what you should look for when choosing what outdoor furniture to buy:

  • Cushioning and Seat Comfort: Hard seats can compress the hips and worsen lower back pain, while overly soft furniture can encourage poor posture. For spine health, you want cushioning that’s firm, but supportive.
  • Seat Height and Depth: Your knees should be at a 90-degree angle when seated, with your feet flat on the ground. If a chair is too high or too low, it can strain your back and legs. Look for chairs with adjustable or appropriate seat heights to suit your body.
  • Proper Lumbar Support: The lumbar region of your back is often the first area to feel strain from poorly designed seating. Look for chairs with curved back rests that follow the natural shape of your spine. Some outdoor furniture doesn’t come with lumbar cushions, but you could purchase them on their own and put them on your furniture.
