Posture is a universally talked about topic. You’ve most likely been told to “fix your posture” or “stand up straight”. Poor posture is often blamed for back pain, stiffness, and other discomforts. Here are some of the most common posture myths:
- Perfect Posture Prevents All Back Pain: Although maintaining good posture can reduce strain on certain muscles and joints, no single posture can prevent all back pain. There are several factors that contribute to back pain.
- Standing Desks Solve All Your Problems: Many people claim that switching to a standing desk will instantly improve your posture and reduce back pain. This is not true. Standing desks can be helpful, but aren’t a magical fix. Standing for long periods of time can strain your lower back just like sitting can. Switching between standing and sitting can help to ease pain.
- Slouching is Always Bad for your Back: Although prolonged slouching can strain your muscles, occasional slouching isn’t inherently harmful. Slouching is a natural resting position for your body that allows your muscles to relax temporarily.
