The November Slump: How Shorter Days Affect Your Posture and Back Health

As the days get shorter now that we’ve had Daylight Savings Time, many people feel like they’re falling into a “November slump”. While it’s easy to blame the weather, this seasonal shift can take a toll on your back for many reasons:

  • Staying Active When You Don’t Want To: Even though it’s cold out and you may not want to exercise, but it’s so important that you do. Some easy things you can do to stay fit are small stretches throughout the day, taking a quick walk, and standing up from time to time after long periods of sitting.
  • The Posture Problem: Shorter days mean more time indoors hunched over your computer or slouching on the couch. It’s important that you keep good posture in everything that you do.
  • How Light and Mood Affect Posture: Posture isn’t just physical, but psychological. When your mood dips, your body language also follows suit. People who feel low in energy tend to slump forward or hunch their shoulders more. The best way to combat this is to get as much vitamin D as you can whether that be through a light therapy plant or vitamin D pills.
