Hello disc replacement fans! Today we’re tackling a total disc replacement at C4-5 and C5-6 for a patient in their 50s with a vigorous lifestyle that did not want a spinal fusion.
Although spinal fusions are performed to increase stability in the spine and alleviate pain, by fusing two or more vertebrae together you actually restrict mobility at that segment. This limits your ability to bend, twist, or flex because those vertebrae no longer move independently. Total disc replacement on the other hand replaces the damaged disc with an artificial one to retain a full range of mobility and allow patients to return to an active lifestyle after recovery.
