The spine is one of the most important bones in your body. You actually wouldn’t be able to function without a spine. The spine is made up of 33 vertebrae that are categorized into these 5 groups:
- Cervical vertebrae: There are 7 cervical vertebrae in your neck.
- Thoracic vertebrae: There are 12 thoracic vertebrae in your upper and middle back and are connected to your ribs.
- Lumbar vertebrae: There are 5 lumbar vertebrae in your lower back. These are the largest vertebrae of the spine and support most of your body’s weight.
- Sacral vertebrae: There are 5 sacral vertebrae that kind of fuse together to make the sacrum which is a triangular bone that connects your spine to your hips.
- Coccygeal vertebrae: There are 4 coccygeal vertebrae that form the coccyx which is also known as your tailbone.
