Anatomical Changes In The Spine

Over time the spine has changed and developed. Starting out from its quadrupel origins to its current bipedal form. Here are some of the most notable anatomical changes in the spine:

  • Pelvic and Hip Modifications: Changes in the pelvis and hips were essential for bipedal locomotion. The pelvis became shorter and broader which helped to provide a stable base for the spine.
  • Development of The S-Curve: One of the most notable adaptations is the development of the S-curve. As humans began walking upright, the spine developed an S-shaped curve. This curve helps to naturally absorb shock.
  • Changes in Vertebrae Structure: In bipedal humans, the lumbar vertebrae are larger and more robust compared to quadrupel humans. This addition helped to increase support of the spine.
