Back Care for Parents

Parenting is physically demanding between lifting toddlers and strollers, bending over bathtubs, and so much more. Over time, these tasks can lead to some back issues. Here’s how you can take care of your kids and take care of your back:

  • Making Bathtime Easier: Leaning over a tub is one of the biggest culprits of parent back pain. To make bathtime easier you can sit on a stool next to the tub, place a knee pad to kneel, or keep supplies within reach so you’re not constantly twisting.
  • Carrying Your Child: Avoiding Lopsided Weight: Most parents carry their child on their hip because it feels convenient, but it actually creates uneven pressure on their lower back and hips. Instead try to alternate between hips or consider a supportive carrier for longer periods of time.
  • Diaper Changes: Raise the Surface: Changing a baby on a lower surface forces you to round your back which can cause pain. You should try to use a changing table at hip height or sit on the floor cross-legged instead of hunching.
