Why Your Sleep Setup Matters More Than You Think

If you wake up with back pain, your spine may be sending you a message and your sleep setup could be the cause. Many people tend to focus on other causes such as poor posture or lifting wrong while sleep setup is often overlooked. Here’s how your sleep setup can affect your spine:

  • The Wrong Mattress: A mattress that is too soft or too hard can do a lot more damage than you would think. The wrong mattress can lead to spinal misalignment and prevent proper spinal curves.
  • Lack of Support: Your spine has natural curves that need to be supported. When there isn’t enough support, your back stays stressed throughout the night. Lack of support can then lead to strained muscles and increased inflammation.
  • Sleep Position Matters: Your sleep position can either help your spine or hurt it. Sleeping on your stomach is the worst position for your back as it provides no support for it. One of the best positions is sleeping on your side as it helps to reduce pressure.
