Common Problems with Spinal Discs

Like every other part of your body, spinal discs can face wear and tear over time. Here are some of the most common disc issues and their causes:

  • Bulging Discs: A bulging disc develops when the disc’s outer layer weakens and bulges outward, but the inner gel doesn’t escape. It may not be painful, but it can compress nearby nerves and cause discomfort.
  • Herniated Discs: A herniated disc is when the outer layer of a disc tears and the inner gel material leaks out. It often puts pressure on nearby nerves, causing pain, numbness, or tingling in the arms and legs.
  • Degenerative Disc Disease: Over time, discs naturally lose water content and become less flexible and more prone to damage. This can lead to chronic back pain or stiffness.
