Winter is the most common season for back injuries. One of the most common back injuries in winter is slipping and falling onto your back and injuring your spine. Here are some things you can do to prevent back injuries this winter:
- Stretch before engaging in sports or exercise: Many people want to get out there and go ice skating, skiing, and snowboarding but it’s important that you stretch before doing these things so that your muscles are loose and won’t become injured. It’s also important you assess your skill level depending on what you’re doing so you don’t hurt yourself.
- Choose the right time to shovel: Many people choose to shovel snow as soon as they get up in the morning. This isn’t good to do because your body is less likely to be warmed up making you more prone to injury. If a lot of snow falls, don’t shovel it all at once. Take breaks and shovel the snow in intervals.
- Seek medical care if needed: If you have persistent back pain or have severely injured yourself, seek medical care immediately. It’s better to be safe than sorry.
