Why Your Back Hurts More When It’s Cold

As the temperature gets colder, many people tend to get back pain. Believe it or not, cold weather can genuinely make back pain worse. Here’s why your back hurts more when it’s cold:

  • Cold Temperatures Tighten Your Muscles: When your body gets cold, your muscles naturally tense up to conserve heat and protect vital organs. This reaction reduces blood flow to your muscles and connective tissues which makes them stiffer and less flexible. This can then lead to increased strain on your spine and a greater risk of pulling a muscle.
  • You Move Less When It’s Cold Out: It’s natural to want to curl up indoors when it’s cold outside but, less movement means weaker muscles, tighter joints, and more back pain. Sitting for long periods of time can strain your spinal discs and muscles also. 
  • Cold Weather Can Affect Your Sleep: The dark, cold months can disrupt your sleep schedule and mood, leading to stress and tension which can contribute to back pain.
