Total Disc Replacement: Why Put A Drain?

See that black line to the right of the cervical discs? That’s a ligament which has lifted off and is now pushing on the edge of the dura – the outer membrane protecting the spinal cord.

An endoscopy won’t help this patient so the next minimally invasive option is total disc replacement. Look at the torn ligament on the axial scan and then the drain I put in during this procedure. Here’s why I think it’s important to put a drain.
