After 40+ years in the field of spine surgery and 20 years of performing total disc replacements, my observations are that lumbar total disc replacements perform better than lumbar fusions over both the short and long term. In my opinion, a total disc replacement implanted by an expert surgeon, the risk of complications is extremely low and the probability of success in returning to a vigorous active lifestyle extremely high.
